- MANU, FROM THE ANDES TO THE RAIN FOREST
DAY 1 CUSCO ANDES – HOSTEL, PILCOPATA
After departing from Cusco in the early morning, we first visit the pre-Inca tombs of Ninamarca, in the colonial town of Paucartambo, also known as a center for folklore in the region. The next stop is the Acjanacu pass (3,560 m) which is the beginning of the Manu Biosphere. From this high pass we can observe the Amazon rain forest below. We then descend through different ecological zones, such as the puna, the dwarf forest and the cloud forest. Along the way we will have a chance to see flora and fauna such as tree ferns and orchids, butterflies, monkeys, birds, toucans, tanagers, among others. The Cloud Forest is home of the Cock of the Rocks, the national bird of Peru (Rupícola peruviana) (We do visit the clay lick) and the spectacled bear, the only bear in South America. We spend the night in a comfortable hostel in the town of Pilcopata. (A, C)
DAY 2 – PILCOPATA – ATALAYA – HOSTEL
We take a 45 min trip to Atalaya (500msnm) where we board our motorized boat and sail to our Hostel (40min. low river) located on the banks of the River Alto Madre de Dios. Here, we will spend the day exploring the natural surroundings, interesting trails and ecosystems. In the afternoon we visit a small lake where we will have the chance to see the enigmatic and prehistoric Hoatzin bird, some caimanes, capybaras, monkeys and various bird species. After dinner, we listen to sounds of the Amazon on a night walk from monkeys, Kalinowski’s agouti, frogs, dwarf owls, Potos and many other animal residents of the night. (D, A, C)
DAY 3 – HOSTEL – PARROT CLAY LICK – CUSCO
Very early we will sail for 15 minutes down river to see the parrot clay lick, where different species of parrots and parakeets give us an impressive show of color and sound. Then we take the boat to start the return trip to Atalaya to a vehicle taking us back to Cusco (arriving at 6pm Approx). (D, A)
